The master suite resides on the top floor of this Broadview Seattle home. As the only space in the house with distant views of Puget Sound, it was imperative that the new layout take advantage of these vistas. The space employs a loft-like feel with an open staircase past the door on the floor below. While various ceiling slopes provide character, they also present many challenges with head-height deep into the edges of the space. The Francis couple wanted to embrace a more refined, cozy loft feel and promote a sense of openness with means to close off or conceal more private areas, such as the master bathroom and closet without the traditional full-height wall approach they had before. The master bathroom can remain open to the bedroom or be closed off with a barn door for added privacy. By relocating the closet behind the bed, this brought about new space for a larger master bathroom. The owners now utilize a double vanity with ample storage and enjoy a wet-room style shower with soaking tub. The couple appreciates being able to both use the larger bathroom at the same time, especially with a separate room for the water closet. Daylight floods the bathroom, making it appear more spacious, despite the variety of ceiling planes. Daylight also pours into the bedroom area from all sides, making its way behind the partial-height, focal-headboard wall leading to the closet area. Thoughtful built-ins in the closet provide his-and-hers hanging areas with plenty of concealed storage as well. The updated layout and design features within each area have allowed the Francis couple to simplify their daily routine.
